Item 1: Poem

“ If you give me a fish,
I will eat today.
If you give teach me to fish,
I will eat my whole life.”

Rhetorical devices:

 Symbol: Fish is used as a symbol of food or a person’s life.
 Repetition: If you………., I will eat…………….
 Climax: today – my whole life.
It is more important to teach a person how to support himself than provide him with things. It is better to do everything on your own, which helps you live freely all your life.

Item 2: Fable

A MISER sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily. One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, “Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it.”

Rhetorical devices:

 Symbol: gold – valuable things, stone – worthless things
 Parallelism: He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it.
 Rhyme: so – go – stone – hole – gold

People should use or share valuable things with others so that they will be more useful. If we just want to keep and hide them, they will become worthless.

Item 3: Cartoon

Rhetoric devices:

 Metaphor: ( hidden comparison) the guy see the situation that 5 people tied to the tracks and he jumped in front of the train – the normal theory; the guy was splat by the train and died – the tragic reality.
 Irony: The contrast between a situation of emergency of others with a foolish action of a heroism person.

Some people overestimated the theory so much that they do not think of the potential dangers in the reality. They are considered as bookworms.

In the first item, i agree with the first sentence of your message, but the second one is far from the meaning of the poem. In the second item, i don’t think the rhetorical device is rhyme because it is used for poems. in addition, I have another message for your third item: some people have to pay an expensive price for overestimating their ability.
