Entry 3: Identifying bias

Item 1:

–        Stereotype

–        Analysis:  People often say that if a person is punk or has hair dyed, they must have rebellious actions. If a person is from Asian, he or she must be good at Maths. And if you are human being, you should be stereotyped. However,  not all Asians study Math well.  The fact that person loves rock music or dyes hair should not be considered as rebel as they just want to show their hobbies or characteristics.

Item 2:

In June 2009, British law student Riam Dean, who had worked at A&F’s flagship store in London’s Saville Row, took the company to an employment tribunal. Dean, who was born without a left forearm, claimed that although she was initially given special permission to wear clothing that covered her prosthetic limb, she was soon told that her appearance breached the company’s “Look Policy” and sent to work in the stock room, out of sight of customers.

–        Discrimination

–        Analysis: The student is a disabled and A&F is a retailer focused on casual wear. Although the store applied her to the sales position, they then sent her to work in the stock room. The reason is that the store thought Dean’s abnormal appearance can affect to the company’s look and didn’t want her to meet customers. They treated her in an unfairly way

–        Prejudice.

–        Analysis: The man in the picture is captured because the Libya police thought that he is a murder. In fact, it is thought that black people often behave worse and are more likely to commit crime than any other race. That’s why the man who is just one of the refugees was arrested without evidence.

in my opinion, the third item is discrimination because below the photo, they have a note that “Người da đen ở Libya bị ngược đãi vì họ bị nghi ngờ cấu kết với nhà lãnh đạo bị lật đổ”, which means black people have been treated in a less favorable way (prejudice in action)

I agree with Hanh that the item 3 is racial discrimination (prejudice in action), not just prejudice.

i don’t think that your 2nd item can be an illustration for discrimination. Simply because initially Dean doesn’t meet the essential requirement of being a staff who meeting with customers. The similar case is that a short-sighted boy cannot register for military academy.
