Item 1:

Argument: “I can’t sleep when theres a full moon, for 2 or 3 days I am restless and sleepless, just lying there waiting for the dawn chorus to kick in. I have blackout blinds and thick curtains, so I never know what the moon is getting up to, but I’v realised that all my restless nights coenside with the full moon. I’ve had a busy and tiring weekend! And about 5 hours sleep total. I look out the window, great big yellow moon is floating there. “

Analysis: when the moon is full, the writer cannot sleep.

Therefore, full moon causes her sleeplessness.

Fallacy: Post hoc. This person is accidently sleepless in full moon nights. And she assumes that the full moon is the reason of her insomnia. It should be noted that the full moon is not related to her sleeplessness but the others reasons such as anxiety, the nervous or healthy condition…makes she sleepless.

Item 2:

Argument: “If Roger is a Democrat, then he is liberal. Roger is not a Democrat, therefore he must not be liberal”.

Source: http://atheism.about.com/library/glossary/general/bldef_denying.htm

Analysis:        Roger is a Democrat (A), he is liberal (B)

Roger is not a Democrat (not A)

He is not liberal (not B)

Fallacy: Denying antecedent

Item 3:

Argument: “Either we increase our property taxes by 15%, or we will have to lay off 15% of our police force.”

Source: http://www.daltonstate.edu/writing-lab/practice-exercises-for-reading-classes/logical_fallacy_practice_3.html

Analysis: the writer tries to convince the reader to accept that there are only two possibilities, one that is laying off the police force (which is truly bad) or the other is increasing property taxes by 15% ( which is less awful).

Fallacy:  False dilemma. There are many different ways to resolve the problem, not just the two offered by the writer. A city can raise its revenues by increasing the taxes on gasoline, liquor, tobacco or by increasing the fees at its airports, harbor, parks, etc. The alternatives are not only raising property taxes and lay offs police force.

The fallacies in second and third item are pointed out in the sources, so I think it’s not suitable for you to pick them. you should choose others and detect the fallacies. Besides, from my point of view, the first item is not a fallacy of post hoc because the author said “I’v realised that all my restless nights coenside with the full moon”. It means that she are not accidentally sleepless in full moon nights, but full moon actually has some bad effects on her sleep. In fact, the full moon can cause some problems with insomnia.

Item 2: I think it’s invalid argument: Wrong premises => wrong conclusion. Because Roger is a Democrat does not mean that he is liberal.
